Hawksbill Station - Robert Silverberg

Hawksbill Station - Robert Silverberg
The authorities have come up with an unconventional but effective way of controlling dissidents. Send them back a billion or so years into the past. A bit hard to escape from there, really.

When a new prisoner is sent back, the current top dog, an aging main with a recent serious injury has to try and hang onto his life, and work out what is up with the new guy.

Coming of the King - Nikolai Tolstoy

Coming of the King - Nikolai Tolstoy
Boring and pretentious, except perhaps for the King’s farters. I forced
myself to finish this, because of the Arthurian theme. These days I
probably would not bother. It sat in my bag for months and months as I
could only bear to read a little bit at a time. This was one very very
dull book for an Arthurian story. Highly disappointing.

Thor - Wayne Smith

Thor - Wayne Smith
Definitely a book that is a bit different. The protagonist is a dog, but all the other characters are human. The story is mostly told from the dog’s point of view.

A mother and her son are living modestly, out of the way, when their Uncle Ted comes to visit. Only Thor, their loyal pack leader, as he sees himself, knows there is something strange and wrong about this man.

This leads to werewolf versus German shepherd conflict.

Blackwood Farm - Anne Rice

Blackwood Farm - Anne Rice
This one was horrible. Looks like someone needs to kidnap her and tell her at gunpoint ‘woman, if you don’t get an editor, you ain’t getting out of here alive’. A mega-successful author with a big head and getting weirder as she gets older, it would seem. This is not a good thing for her readers. Go back and enjoy one of her excellent earlier books instead, stay well away from this one.

Circle of Light - Martin Middleton

Circle of Light - Martin Middleton
There seemed to be more cardboard robots in this book, than characters. The swords and axes had more personality. For a writer with more limited talents, it would be much better for him to have a look at what James Barclay did, I think. An excuse to have a fighting band do some fighting, and get involved in conflict, without ever seeming to be humans.
